Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders

Comprehensive evaluation and long-term management of seizure disorders.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions, affecting millions of Americans. At Blacksburg Neurology, P.C., we provide thorough diagnostic evaluation including EEG monitoring, seizure classification, and individualized anti-epileptic medication management. We work closely with patients and their families to optimize seizure control while minimizing medication side effects, and we coordinate with other specialists as needed for complex cases.

Who It's For

Patients who have experienced a single unexplained seizure, those with an established epilepsy diagnosis seeking specialist management, and individuals whose seizures are not adequately controlled on current medications.

Benefits

Accurate seizure classification, optimized medication management, reduced seizure frequency, improved quality of life, and coordination with surgical epilepsy programs when appropriate.

Our Approach

We begin with a comprehensive history and neurological examination, followed by on-site EEG recording. Based on findings, we develop an individualized treatment plan that balances seizure control with medication tolerability and lifestyle considerations.

Whether you have experienced a single seizure or have been living with epilepsy for years, our goal is to help you achieve the best possible quality of life — with the fewest limitations on your daily activities.

Headache & Migraine Management

Targeted treatment for chronic migraines, cluster headaches, and tension-type headaches.

Headache disorders range from occasional tension headaches to debilitating chronic migraines that interfere with every aspect of daily life. Our headache clinic offers thorough diagnostic evaluation to classify your headache type accurately, followed by a customized prevention and acute treatment strategy. We utilize the latest evidence-based therapies including preventive medications, CGRP antagonists, and lifestyle modification protocols.

Who It's For

Patients with frequent or severe headaches, those with migraines that are not responding to over-the-counter treatments, individuals with chronic daily headache, and patients who have never received a formal headache diagnosis.

Benefits

Accurate headache classification, dramatically reduced attack frequency and severity, improved daily function, access to the newest migraine-specific therapies, and a long-term management strategy tailored to your lifestyle.

Our Approach

Our systematic approach includes a detailed headache history, neurological examination, and review of prior treatments. We develop both an acute treatment plan (for individual attacks) and a preventive strategy (to reduce frequency), adjusting based on your response over time.

Many patients who come to us have been suffering for years without an accurate diagnosis or effective treatment. Our systematic approach often produces dramatic improvements in frequency and severity within the first few months of care.

Stroke Evaluation & Management

Post-stroke care, TIA evaluation, and stroke risk reduction strategies.

Following a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), timely and expert neurological evaluation is critical to preventing recurrence and maximizing recovery. We provide comprehensive stroke workup including assessment of stroke mechanism, vascular risk factor management, and coordination of rehabilitation services. Our approach focuses on both acute management and long-term secondary prevention.

Who It's For

Patients who have experienced a stroke or TIA, individuals with significant cerebrovascular risk factors requiring neurological monitoring, and patients with post-stroke neurological deficits requiring ongoing management.

Benefits

Reduced risk of recurrent stroke through targeted secondary prevention, optimized vascular risk factor management, coordination of rehabilitation services, and long-term neurological monitoring.

Our Approach

We conduct a thorough stroke workup to identify the mechanism of the event, review vascular imaging and cardiac evaluation results, and develop a comprehensive secondary prevention strategy including appropriate antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy.

If you or a loved one has experienced a stroke or TIA, early specialized evaluation can significantly reduce the risk of a subsequent, potentially more serious event. We provide the continuity of care that is essential in the months and years following a cerebrovascular event.

Memory Loss & Dementia Care

Evaluation of cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, and related dementias.

Cognitive decline and memory loss require careful, compassionate evaluation to distinguish between normal aging, mild cognitive impairment, and the various forms of dementia. We conduct detailed cognitive assessments, review neuroimaging, and coordinate laboratory testing to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. For patients with established dementia diagnoses, we provide ongoing management of symptoms and coordination with family caregivers.

Who It's For

Patients or family members concerned about memory changes, individuals with a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment, patients with established dementia diagnoses seeking specialist management, and those with a family history of early-onset dementia.

Benefits

Accurate diagnosis distinguishing treatable from neurodegenerative causes, appropriate medication management, family education and support, connection to community resources, and a compassionate, long-term care relationship.

Our Approach

We use validated cognitive assessment tools, review neuroimaging and laboratory results, and take a thorough history from both the patient and a knowledgeable family member. We approach these conversations with sensitivity and provide clear, honest guidance about diagnosis and prognosis.

We understand that concerns about memory and cognition are among the most emotionally significant health issues a patient or family can face. We approach these conversations with sensitivity, clarity, and a commitment to supporting both the patient and their loved ones.

Neuropathy & Nerve Disorders

Diagnosis and treatment of peripheral neuropathy and nerve compression syndromes.

Peripheral neuropathy — numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness in the hands and feet — can result from diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, autoimmune conditions, medication effects, and many other causes. Accurate diagnosis of the underlying etiology is essential to effective treatment. We utilize on-site nerve conduction studies and EMG to characterize nerve and muscle involvement, guiding targeted therapy.

Who It's For

Patients with numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness in the extremities; individuals with diabetes seeking neuropathy evaluation; patients with suspected carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy, or radiculopathy; and those with unexplained muscle weakness.

Benefits

Precise identification of the type and location of nerve damage, identification and treatment of underlying causes, effective symptom management, and guidance on preventing progression.

Our Approach

On-site EMG and nerve conduction studies allow us to precisely characterize the pattern of nerve involvement. This guides targeted treatment addressing both the underlying cause and symptom management, often producing meaningful improvement in patients who were told their neuropathy was untreatable.

Many patients with neuropathy have been told their symptoms cannot be treated. In our experience, identifying and addressing the underlying cause — combined with symptom management strategies — can produce meaningful improvement in comfort and function.

Sleep Disorders

Neurological evaluation of sleep disturbances including REM sleep behavior disorder.

Sleep disorders with neurological underpinnings — including REM sleep behavior disorder, restless legs syndrome, and sleep disruption associated with neurological conditions — fall within our area of expertise. We evaluate the neurological components of sleep disturbance and coordinate with sleep medicine specialists when polysomnography or CPAP therapy is indicated.

Who It's For

Patients with REM sleep behavior disorder (acting out dreams), restless legs syndrome, sleep disturbances associated with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, and individuals whose sleep problems may have a neurological cause.

Benefits

Identification of neurological causes of sleep disturbance, appropriate treatment of neurologically-mediated sleep disorders, coordination with sleep medicine specialists, and improved sleep quality and daytime function.

Our Approach

We evaluate the neurological components of sleep disturbance through clinical assessment and, when indicated, coordination with sleep medicine for polysomnography. Treatment is tailored to the specific neurological mechanism identified.

Poor sleep has profound effects on neurological health and quality of life. If your sleep problems have a neurological component, we can help identify it and develop an appropriate management plan.

Electroencephalography (EEG)

On-site brain wave recording for seizure evaluation and other neurological conditions.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is performed directly in our office, eliminating the need for patients to travel to a hospital or imaging center. EEG records the electrical activity of the brain and is essential for the evaluation of seizure disorders, encephalopathy, and other conditions affecting brain function. Standard and extended EEG studies are available based on clinical need.

Who It's For

Patients being evaluated for seizure disorders or epilepsy, individuals with unexplained episodes of altered consciousness or awareness, patients with encephalopathy, and those requiring EEG monitoring for other neurological conditions.

Benefits

Faster answers through on-site testing, results interpreted by the physician who knows you best, no need for referrals to outside facilities, and seamless integration of diagnostic findings into your overall care plan.

Our Approach

EEG is performed in our office by our trained EEG technician and personally interpreted by Dr. Huntsman. Results are discussed with you directly at your appointment, ensuring that diagnostic findings are immediately integrated into your care.

Having EEG available on-site means you receive faster answers and a more integrated care experience. Results are interpreted by Dr. Huntsman and discussed with you directly at your appointment.

EMG & Nerve Conduction Studies

Electromyography and nerve conduction velocity testing for muscle and nerve disorders.

Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) are the gold standard diagnostic tools for evaluating disorders of the peripheral nervous system, including neuropathy, radiculopathy (pinched nerves), carpal tunnel syndrome, myopathy, and motor neuron disease. These studies are performed in our office by Dr. Huntsman, who personally conducts and interprets each study.

Who It's For

Patients with numbness, tingling, or weakness in the extremities; individuals with suspected carpal tunnel syndrome or other nerve compression syndromes; patients with radiculopathy (pinched nerves); those with unexplained muscle weakness; and individuals being evaluated for motor neuron disease.

Benefits

Precise localization of nerve or muscle pathology, definitive diagnosis guiding targeted treatment, potential avoidance of unnecessary surgery, and results interpreted by the treating physician for seamless care integration.

Our Approach

Dr. Huntsman personally performs and interprets every EMG/NCS study at our practice. This hands-on approach ensures that the diagnostic data is immediately integrated with your clinical history and examination findings, producing the most meaningful and actionable results.

Many patients arrive having been told they may need surgery for a nerve problem. In some cases, EMG/NCS findings allow us to confirm or rule out the suspected diagnosis and guide a more conservative or targeted treatment approach before surgical intervention is considered.
